CARE Egypt Foundation for Development commissioned Common Ground Solutions to facilitate youth led participatory action research (PAR) under Climate Leaders, a project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Within 60 working days, CGS trains and mentors 50 youth researchers from 25 youth led civil society organizations in 3 governorates, Cairo, Assiut and Beni Suef, who survey at least 1,000 young women and men.
The terms of reference ask for research led by young people on the climate challenges and solutions in their communities, with technical review so that it informs the project's awareness campaigns, local policy recommendations, advocacy event and network strengthening.
CGS works in 8 overlapping phases. The youth researchers complete a 4 day training and collect data through SurveyCTO in their organizations' catchments, supervised by 3 CGS field supervisors. The plan covers 1,020 interviews with young people aged 18 to 35, stratified by governorate, gender and location, 12 participatory sessions in separate groups, 6 transect walks, 25 photovoice stories, 6 actor mapping sessions and 15 stakeholder interviews.
Data are checked daily, with back checks on 10 percent of surveys, and informed consent, CARE safeguarding standards and a referral protocol apply throughout. Survey data are analyzed statistically and qualitative material through content analysis, then interpreted with the youth researchers and validated in 3 sessions.
CGS delivers an inception report, training materials, raw and cleaned datasets, a research report with actor and network mapping, and technical support to the campaigns and policy recommendations.
